Caramelized Onion and Cheese Bread
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons instant yeast
3/4 cup warm water
2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Filling:
2 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup shredded cheese (Gruyère or cheddar)
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
In a bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Add warm water and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms.
Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
2. Caramelize the Onions:
Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown
.
Remove from heat and let cool.
3. Assemble the Bread:
Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Spread caramelized onions and shredded cheese evenly over the surface. Sprinkle with fresh thyme if desired
.
Roll the dough tightly like a jelly roll, then place it in a greased loaf pan.
4. Bake:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
.
Let the assembled loaf rise for 20 minutes. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
5. Serve:
Let the bread cool slightly before slicing. Perfect as a savory side or snack!
